Bible Studies

Whether you are brand new to the Christian faith or are an experienced theologian, there is a place for you here at Spirit of Hope. The Word of God is like an inexhaustible well. No matter where we are on our faith journey, God will take us deeper and deeper into His Word.  Here are the studies currently being offered at Spirit of Hope. Check back frequently as we rotate classes often and develop new ones regularly.

ELEMENTARY SUNDAY SCHOOL
(Sundays at 11:00 am Beginning September 10th)

“Luther and His Small Cat!”
Elementary Lessons About Faith Through the Small Catechism

Elementary-aged students will enjoy time together as they learn the basics of the Christian faith through age-appropriate lessons about Luther’s Small Catechism. Utilizing the “Luther’s Small Cat” series by Sola Publishing, students will learn about baptism, The Lord’s Prayer, The Ten Commandments, The Apostle’s Creed, Communion, and Confession. Students will have fun with “Luther’s Cat” and will also enjoy games, crafts, activities, and more.

Adult Sunday School: Advent

Our Adult Sunday School class will learn about this history of Advent, why we celebrate Advent, what it means to be an “Advent People”, and some of the reasons for the various traditions found within the Advent season. This class will be taught by Pastor Wendy.

DIGGING DEEPER BIBLE STUDY
(Tuesdays 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm)

Join Pastor Wendy and Intern Joy as we dig deeper into Sunday’s sermon text. Often, the questions we have about the text will lead us to other texts and other theological questions. Everything is on the table and there is no such thing as a bad question! You’re welcome to bring a lunch!

Adult Sunday School: Starting January 14, 2023, 11:00 am
Peace Talks: The Good News of Jesus in a Donkey-Elephant War

With the United States more divided than at any time since the Civil War, polarization, mistrust, and blame permeate not only the talking points of Washington and the news media, but also the conversations and social media feeds of most Americans. Yet in a nation with so many for whom following Jesus, the Prince of Peace, is central, shouldn’t it be different?

If you’re searching for a peace that speaks louder than today’s cultural shouting match; if you’re curious how those with an affinity for Jesus might offer a better way of listening and talking through deeply-held differences — if you’re ready for some good news, then join us for this in-depth book study that will take place during our Sunday School hour. Pastor Wendy will teach this class, based upon the book of the same title, written by LCMC Pastor, Rev. David Drum.

Copies of this book will be available for purchase ($15) on the information table at the church. Scholarships are available. You may also order your own copy via Amazon.

Spirit of Hope is now a “Bethel Congregation”! This means that we have become part of a family of congregations around the world that offers the Bethel Bible Series (which we will just call Bethel) to its members and to our community. Our first two-year-long Bethel course will begin on September 13th and will be on Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm.

The Bethel Series will equip you to:

  • Comprehend the major themes that run
throughout the Old and New Testaments by
drawing together biblical stories and passages that
    otherwise seem disjointed.
  • Understand the radical differences between
Hebrew thought and Western-thought that impact
how we view the Bible and its content.
  • See the various parts of Biblical messages in direct
    relationship to its historical context.
  • Interpret Scriptures in its relationship to the whole
of God’s revelation, and not in isolation.

Who should take the Bethel class? Everyone! Whether you are a new Christian or a theologian, whether you are new to Bethel or have taken the class before, God will use this time to draw you closer to him in profound ways.

Who will be teaching our first Bethel class? Bethel is taught by teachers who have not only gone through the Bethel class before but who embark on additional studies that equip them to teach the course. Spirit of Hope currently has four trained Bethel teachers: Wayne Schultz, Ken and Anne Carpenter, and Pastor Wendy.

The cost of the Bethel notebook (examples are on our information table) is $60 (checks payable to Spirit of Hope with “Adult Ed” in the memo line). Financial assistance is available, so please do not let the cost of the book deter you from participating. Couples are welcome to share a Bethel notebook and can each use a separate regular notebook for note-taking. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Pastor Wendy.

PLEASE NOTE: YEAR ONE IS CURRENTLY CLOSED TO NEW APPLICANTS. BUT WE WILL BE STARTING A NEW “YEAR ONE” CLASS AGAIN IN THE FUTURE.
